Press release from the Brennan Center for Justice:
Federal Court in KS to Hear Arguments on KS, AZ Voter Reg Restrictions
The U.S. District Court in Wichita will hear arguments tomorrow, December 13, in Kris W. Kobach et al. v. United States Election Assistance Commission, which seeks to undermine federal voter protections and restrict voter registration access.
Kansas and Arizona filed the lawsuit in August to require voters to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote, despite Supreme Court finding this summer invalidating Arizona’s restrictive registration requirements.
Last month, the League of Women Voters U.S., Kansas, and Arizona – represented by Brennan Center for Justice and others – filed a motion to intervene in the case, challenging the states’ proposed citizenship restrictions for voter registration.
“The Kansas and Arizona laws would make it harder for certain citizens to vote,” said Wendy Weiser, who directs the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program and represents the League affiliates in this case. “The Supreme Court this year invalidated Arizona’s law and clearly confirmed Congress’s authority to protect the right to vote in federal elections. This lawsuit by Kansas and Arizona is a transparent attempt to undermine that authority, and it could seriously hurt voters.”
