The goal of the popular gun buybacks held last spring in Phoenix was
clear: purchase and destroy as many unwanted weapons as possible before a
new state law requiring police to sell firearms instead of melting them
down took effect.
The program collected nearly 2,000 weapons, and Phoenix police worked nearly 175 hours of overtime — at a cost of about $10,000 — to ensure the guns were destroyed before the law kicked in last Friday.

“I’m very happy we were able to get these destroyed before the law took effect,” said Hildy Saizow, president of Arizonans for Gun Safety.. “That’s what we promised the public, and no matter what the Legislature did, we needed to meet that objective.”
Wait for it . . . the high priest of idolatrous gun worship condemned this heresy:
Charles Heller, spokesman for the Arizona Citizens Defense League, a Tucson-based non-profit organization that advocates for gun rights, said the additional $10,000 Phoenix spent to process the weapons could have been better used arming and training residents.
“Maybe, just maybe, you could have a program that instructs poor people on just the basics in gun safety, so they could devote whatever meager resources they have to buying a gun,” Heller said.
Poor people . . . meager resources . . . poor people spend every dime they earn to put a roof over their head, food on the table, clothes and shoes on their kids, gas in the car -- and the high priest of idolatrous gun worship thinks they should waste their meager resources on one of his holy relics guns? You have seriously effed up priorities, Dude.
Yet our Tea-Publican legislators cower before this high priest of idolatrous gun worship and lay prostate at his feet, hoping for his blessings of blood money campaign contributions -- or at least not a primary opponent. And you wonder why Arizona is the laughing-stock of the rest of the nation.
I fully expect to see a tear-soaked column in the Arizona Republic by its "Miss NRA," Joanna Allhands, decrying the "union thugs" in the Phoenix Police Department who were working overtime just to "spike" their pension benefits, only to destroy her precious holy relics unwanted firearms.
