At President Obama's press conference today following his meeting with Congressional leadership regarding the sequester, this actually happened:
QUESTION: Mr. President, to your question, what could you do. First of all, couldn’t you just have them down here and refuse to let them leave the room until you have a deal?
(LAUGHTER)
OBAMA: You know, the -- I mean, Jessica (ph), I -- I am not a dictator. I’m the president. So, ultimately if Mitch McConnell or John Boehner say, “We need to go to catch a plane,” I can’t have Secret Service block the doorway. Right?
QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)
OBAMA: I -- I -- I understand. And -- and -- and -- and I -- and I -- I know that this has been some of the conventional wisdom that’s been floating around Washington that, somehow, even though most people agree that I’m being reasonable, that most people agree I’m presenting a fair deal, the fact that they don’t take it means that I should, somehow, you know, do a Jedi mindmild with these folks and convince them to do what’s right.
Well, they’re elected. We have a constitutional system of government. The speaker of the House, and the leader of the Senate, and all those folks have responsibilities. What I can do is, I can make the best possible case for why we need to do the right thing. I can speak to the American people about the consequences of the decisions that Congress is making, or -- or the lack of decision- making by Congress.
So with the sequester going into effect, what are the Beltway media villagers fixated on? You guessed it. NPR Blog: Jedi? Vulcan? Mind Meld? Mind Trick? What Was Obama Thinking?. POLITICO Tiger Beat on the Potomac: Sequestration 2013: Twitter mind meld over Obama 'Jedi' trick. ABC News blog: Obama's 'Jedi Mind Meld' a Sci Fi Faux Pas.
The Beltway media is an epic failure. Old lawyer joke: "Q: What do you call 100 lawyers at the bottom of the Potomac River? A: A good start." It's time to march the Betlway media into the Potomac River. They are less than useless.
UPDATE: Forced to live in a world with childish Beltway media villagers, the White House was compelled to tweet an acknowledgment of President Obama’s geek fail. The statement is on message, while also being a hilarious Star Trek/Star Wars mashup, and comes complete with a new web address: WH.gov/JediMindMeld. (h/t The Last Word). This is what the Beltway media has done to our politics.
