The lamest of lame duck Administrations continues to ratchet up fear and concern about unproven and non-specific threats to our space infrastructure in order to leave behind yet another expensive paranoiac turd hanging around America's neck: an arms race in space the is as useless as it is ruinously expensive. Please read my earlier post about this Administration's efforts to ignite a military space race: Newsvine - U.S. Warns of Threat to Satellites.
The Bush administration warned Wednesday against threats by terrorist groups and other nations against U.S. commercial and military satellites, and discounted the need for a treaty aimed at preventing an arms race in space.
Undersecretary of State Robert G. Joseph also reasserted U.S. policy that it has a right to use force against hostile nations or terror groups that might try to attack American satellites or ground installations that support space programs.
President Bush adopted a new U.S. space policy earlier this year.
"We reserve the right to defend ourselves against hostile attacks and interference with our space assets," Joseph said in prepared remarks to the George C. Marshall Institute.
Joseph, the senior arms control official at the State Department, said nations cannot all be counted on to use space purely for peaceful purposes.
"A number of countries are exploring and acquiring capabilities to counter, attack, and defeat U.S. space systems," Joseph said.
He also said terrorists "understand our vulnerabilities and have targeted our economy in the past, as they did on 9/11." He said terrorists and enemy states might view the U.S. space program as "a highly lucrative target," while sophisticated technologies could improve their ability to interfere with U.S. space systems and services.
Joseph did not identify terror groups or nations that might have such motives. An aide to Joseph, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter, said that information was classified.
"For our part, we must take all of these threats seriously because space capabilities are essential" to the U.S. economy and government, Joseph said. He said the U.S. is more reliant on space than any other country.
"No nation, no state-actor, should be under the illusion that the United States will tolerate a denial of our right to the use of space for peaceful purposes," he said.
Wade Boese, a spokesman for the private Arms Control Association, challenged the Administration's policy. He said rejecting additional international arms controls for space runs counter to U.S. security interests "because the United States has the most to lose from an unregulated space arena."
Boese said he believes the administration wants to avoid negotiations in order to preserve the possibility of deploying space-based missile defense systems, such as interceptors.
China will have the same Satellite network in space in the next 12 months, that we have deployed over the years for our security and communications. This was thanks to President Bill Clinton giving The Lorale Corporation(Hughes) the green light to give China the gyros to launch highly synchonous satellites. Most if not all of there attempts to launch failed before they got our gyro systems. When the authorities found out about it the CEO resigned and left the country but it was to late.
Today the North American Free Trade agreement signed by the President of Mexico, Canada and The United States has given the United States to China on a plate by turning over taxpayer funded Federal Highways to China, and Mexico free of change. These Federal Highways were built for our use in time of War to land aircraft and for the free flow of our military. Our Currency will be merged with Canada and Mexico to make a North American currency like the Euro. Mexico owning part of Kansas City as an inspection hub to Canada was taded for United States inspectors being placed in Mexico at the hugepoint of entry in mexico where giant Chinese container ships will port after receiving shipment through the once owned by the United States Panama Canal that Jimmy Carter gave to China and our military base in Panama is now hosting Chinese fighter aircraft.
All of this and more is posted on my web-site to read about as we have been sold out to "The New World Order" of eletes right under your nose.
So as you Drink Liberally I hope you remember The United States as it was just a few years ago, and the Constitution that once was the Rule of Law, sold down the river by both political parties for big bucks at the voting booth!
All of this and more has made Congress impotent to pass laws or govern inside United States borders,as we have seen as 20 million illegalls have taken over Workers Rights of American Citizens in State after State!

Mike; I recal the military space race began when Russia launched the FIRST satellite into space in the 1950's?

I suspect that companies like GE, Hughes, Boeing, etc., are pissed that the infrastructure giants like Halliburton and Bechtel are getting all the government $$$ funneled in their direction. Bush has to throw them a bone before he leaves office or the Republican presidential candidate will have hell to pay. I seriously doubt that this is about national security.

Jane;
Hughes(Raytheon) is hardly suffering with its move from CT. to Tucson cutting its wages scales in half ; now trying to cut them again forcing its Union to strike with a Trillion dollar defense contract that builds every single system in the Department of Defense,as the last and only Defense contractor after buying out Hughes.
As for Haliburton supplying everything from porable toilets to napkins and silverware to rental cars, trucks and tankers to haul fuel , Iam unaware of any other company that can supply what you need better that FEMA can today!
