Ben Stein: "Teach Intelligent Design"

by David Safier

Awhile back, I applauded Ben Stein for breaking with his conservative brethren and calling for higher taxes on the rich. At the end of the post, I wrote, "Ben Stein, you'€™re this Tax-and-Spend Liberal'€™s new best friend."

Let me qualify that statement. When it comes to tax policy, Ben and I agree. Elsewhere . . . not so much.

Stein is the front man for the film, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, to be released in April, which apparently makes the argument that allowing the teaching of Intelligent Design in schools is an academic freedom issue.

Listen, Ben. Teaching science is about teaching science. Faith is fine, faith is wonderful, but faith is not part of a science curriculum. If the ideas behind Intelligent Design can be substantiated by using scientific method, fine. But so far as I've seen, all the ID folks do is find problems with the theory of evolution, then say, if your theory isn't perfect, you have to admit that God designed the universe.

Just because we're not entirely certain about the geological makeup of the moon doesn't mean we have to believe the moon is made of green cheese, Ben.

I'll tell you what, though. If you make a lot of money off the film, how about using the profits to make another movie, "Giving Back: Tax Cuts for the Rich Not Allowed."
